Prizemna Amerika

Prizemna Amerika

Iljf i Petrov

At the end of 1935, the famous Russian writing duo set off on a car trip across the United States, where they spent a total of three and a half months.

As official Soviet writers and correspondents of the Pravda newspaper, they describe getting to know American culture and different layers of American society. They visit big cities and small, patterned towns, Indian settlements, national parks, go to Mexico to watch bullfighting, attend rodeos, American football matches and catch fights, and from the hitchhikers they accept along the way, they learn many details about the "little people's" view of life and the struggle with unemployment, since it is a time when the consequences of the Great Economic Crisis are still being felt. Their guide travels with them in the car - the peculiar Mr. Adams and Mrs. Adams in the role of driver. Parts of the travelogue were initially published in Pravda and the magazine Ogonjok, in their entirety in 1936 in the magazine Znamja, and published in 1937
