Iz života, sv. I

Ivan Vlašić

"From Life" (Volume I) by Monsignor Ivan Vlašić is a collection of short stories, sketches, anecdotes, and spiritual reflections from Catholic life. Moral and inspirational prose by a priest from Banja Luka published on the eve of World War II.

Monsignor Ivan Vlašić (1888-1984) was a long-time priest, preacher and spiritual writer in the Diocese of Banja Luka. The book belongs to the type of popular Catholic literature of the interwar period – simple, pious and didactic, intended for a wider audience of believers, families and young people.

The content consists of short stories and incidents from everyday life, family, village and parish community, interwoven with Christian moral messages. The author covers topics such as faith in everyday life, family love and sacrifice, trials and tribulations, repentance, maternal care, youth and upbringing, and opposition to sin and worldly temptations. The style is emotional, realistic with a touch of sentimentality, typical of Catholic prose of that time – the goal is the spiritual edification and strengthening of the reader's faith.

The book is written in simple language, easy to read, with an emphasis on the practical application of Christian values in everyday life. Today it is a rare antiquarian publication, interesting for the study of Catholic literature in Bosnia and Herzegovina and Croatia before World War II and the work of Banja Luka priest-writers.

Vlašić also published other spiritual books (e.g. collections of sermons), and the cycle Iz života represents his most famous prose work in this genre. The work reflects the spirit of Catholic renewal and pastoral work in the difficult times of pre-war Yugoslavia, with an emphasis on the preservation of faith and morality among Croatian Catholics in Bosnia.
