"Orthography of the Croatian or Serbian Language" by Dragutin Boranić is one of the most important Croatian orthographic manuals of the interwar period. It establishes rules of writing, standardizes the language, and shapes school and public language prac

Orthography of the Croatian or Serbian Language by Dragutin Boranić is one of the most important spelling manuals in the history of the Croatian language. The 1928 edition represents the fourth edition of the work that served for decades as the basic school and normative spelling in the Croatian language area. Boranić continued the orthographic tradition of Ivan Broz and his work played a crucial role in the standardization of the Croatian literary language during the first half of the 20th century.

The manual systematically covers the rules for writing words, the use of sounds and letters, compound and compound writing, punctuation, upper and lower case letters, and other spelling issues important for school teaching, administration, publishing, and public use of the language. The work is written in a clear and didactic manner, which is why it was intended for students, teachers, officials, and all users of the standard language.

Boranić's Orthography was an official and widely accepted language manual through several editions published between 1921 and 1951, and the 1928 edition testifies to a period of intensive shaping of linguistic norms in the then Kingdom of SHS.

As an antiquarian linguistic manual, the book today has great cultural and historical value. It represents an important document of the development of Croatian orthographic norms, education and language policy, and provides insight into the rules and standards that shaped written communication of several generations of students and educated language users. Due to its influence, Boranić's Orthography is considered one of the key works of the Croatian linguistic tradition of the 20th century.
