Im Netz der Zauberer: Eine andere Geschichte der Familie Mann

Marianne Krüll

A biography of the Mann family that reveals their complex relationships, artistic ambitions, and personal conflicts, offering a different perspective on one of the most famous literary families of the 20th century.

Im Netz der Zauberer: Eine andere Geschichte der Familie Mann by Marianne Krüll is one of the most significant books about the Mann family because it leaves the framework of a classic biography and offers a sociological and psychological portrait of the entire family. Instead of focusing exclusively on Thomas or Heinrich Mann, the author explores the mutual relationships of all family members over as many as six generations, connecting their lives, literary works and family patterns.

The book is based on many years of research and uses letters, diaries, memoirs and other material that became available to researchers in the early 1990s. The starting point of the analysis is Klaus Mann's suicide, from which the author reconstructs a complex network of family relationships marked by ambition, love, rivalry, a sense of duty, but also depression, addictions and tragic destinies. She pays special attention to the women of the Mann family, whose role in previous biographies has often been neglected.

Krüll does not make sensationalist "new discoveries", but rather connects the private lives of the family members with their literary works in an innovative way, showing how personal experiences, conflicts and family traumas shaped their creativity. The publication is further enhanced by three overview family tree maps, which make it easier for the reader to follow the numerous family members and their mutual connections. It is precisely this interdisciplinary approach – a combination of sociology, psychology, genealogy and literary analysis – that makes this book one of the most respected works on the Mann family.
