Fremde im eigenen Haus

Fremde im eigenen Haus

Juro Marčinković

A moving novel about the experience of migration, alienation, and the search for identity. The author explores the fate of people torn between their homeland and the new world, feeling like strangers both in a foreign land and in their own home.

Fremde im eigenen Haus ("Strangers in One's Own House") is a novel by the famous Bosnian Franciscan and writer Fr. Jure Marčinković, published in German in Munich in 1991. The work deals with the deeply moving and timeless theme of migration, cultural cleavage, and psychological and social alienation that people encounter in search of a better life outside their homeland.

Through a strong narrative structure, Marčinković thematizes the complex experience of departures and returns. The main characters, carried away by economic and political circumstances, leave their home to create a new future abroad. However, life in a foreign country carries with it the invisible burden of maladjustment, misunderstanding, and inner emptiness. The greatest tragedy of the characters occurs when they realize that over the years they have become strangers in the country they live in, but that even in their own homeland and family they are no longer perceived as their own.

By weaving together personal testimonies, spiritual insights, and a deep understanding of human psychology, the author asks key questions: Where is our home, and what is the price of losing our roots? This novel presents an exceptionally valuable and compassionate portrait of displaced people, giving voice to all who struggle with a sense of belonging in the modern world.
