The Dreamers (published in German as Paradies auf dem Vulkan) is a striking novel by Ellen Bromfield Geld, daughter of the famous writer Louis Bromfield. Drawing inspiration from her own life in South America, the author sets the plot in the vast and lush landscapes of Brazil, where people of different backgrounds meet, driven by a common need – the search for their own dreams and a new beginning.
At the center of the story is Lia, a woman deeply connected to nature and the land on which she lives. Her unwavering love for the estate and tradition comes into conflict with the ambitions of her husband Josh, an enterprising and restless man attracted by rapid progress and business speculation. Through their relationship, but also through the lives of the colorful local characters who surround them – from artists to activists – the author explores the collision of the old and new worlds amidst Brazil’s economic and political turmoil.
