Altered States is a novel that fictionalizes Timothy Leary's thesis about the relationship between states of consciousness and reality.
The main character is a young scientist, Edward Jessup, an experimental psychologist. By conducting experiments on himself, he brings himself into various ALTERED STATES OF CONSCIOUSNESS. Using DRUGS, where the influence of Carlos Castaneda on the author of the novel is visible, and some other means, he, not caring about the consequences, follows his personal logic of SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH. The novel was made into a film of the same name, directed by Ken Russell.
