Altered States ist ein Roman, der Timothy Learys These über die Beziehung zwischen Bewusstseinszuständen und Realität fiktionalisiert.

Die Hauptfigur ist der junge Wissenschaftler Edward Jessup, ein Experimentalpsychologe. Durch Selbstversuche versetzt er sich in verschiedene veränderte Bewusstseinszustände. Mithilfe von Drogen, wobei der Einfluss von Carlos Castaneda auf den Autor des Romans deutlich wird, und anderen Mitteln, folgt er, ohne Rücksicht auf die Folgen, seiner persönlichen Logik der wissenschaftlichen Forschung. Der Roman wurde unter demselben Titel von Ken Russell verfilmt.
