Preko rijeke i u šumu (1950) roman je američkog pisca Ernesta Hemingwaya. Naslov je izveden iz posljednjih riječi generala Konfederacije iz vremena američkog građanskog rata Thomasa J. "Stonewall" Jacksona.

Preko rijeke i u šumu roman je Ernesta Hemingwaya koji se smatra jednim od njegovih najosobnijih i najkontroverznijih djela. Radnja se odvija u poslijeratnoj Veneciji i njezinoj okolici, gdje pedesetogodišnji pukovnik Richard Cantwell, veteran Prvog i Drugog svjetskog rata, dolazi na posljednji lov na patke i susret s mladom groficom Renatom, koja je više od trideset godina mlađa od njega.

Roman je ispripovijedan kroz sjećanja i razgovore. Cantwell se prisjeća ratnih trauma, vojničke karijere, uspona i padova, dok s Renatom dijeli trenutke ljubavi, elegancije i dubokog razumijevanja. Hemingway majstorski slika venecijanske kanale, hotele, restorane i lagune, uz bogate opise hrane, pića i atmosfere grada.

Djelo je intenzivna meditacija o starosti, bolesti, smrti, muškoj časti i nemogućoj ljubavi. Cantwell je tipičan Hemingwayev junak – grub, ponosan, ranjen i stoički suočen s krajem. Roman je autobiografski obojen (Hemingway je u to vrijeme imao slične zdravstvene probleme i ljubav prema Veneciji).

Iako je po objavljivanju dobio mješovite kritike, Preko rijeke i u šumu danas se cijeni kao zrelo, melankolično djelo koje najavljuje stil Starca i mora. Preporučuje se ljubiteljima Hemingwaya, ratne proze i priča o ljubavi, gubitku i dostojanstvenom suočavanju sa smrću.
