Antoine de Saint-Exupéry

A famous novel by A. de Saint-Exupéry. Through the story of pioneers of night aviation in South America, the author explores human courage, sense of duty, loneliness and the struggle against unfavorable forces of nature.

Night Flight (Vol de nuit, published in 1931) is one of the most famous and most highly regarded literary works by French writer and aviator Antoine de Saint-Exupéry. Based on the author's personal experiences while working as an airmail manager in Argentina, the novel provides a dramatic and poetic portrayal of the early era of civil aviation and the daily dangers faced by the first airmail pilots. The story takes place over the course of a tense night in Buenos Aires and over the wild expanses of South America. The story centers on Rivière, a stern and unwavering airline director who insists on night flights in order for airmail to remain competitive with rail and ship, and pilot Fabien, who finds himself caught in a devastating cyclonic storm on a flight from Patagonia. While Fabien, in the darkness of the battle with the wild elements, struggles for survival in the cockpit without radio communication and fuel, Riviere, in command, experiences an inner drama: he is aware that his unwavering discipline and decisions endanger human lives, but firmly believes that the sacrifice is necessary for the sake of a higher goal and human progress. Through this tension, the author reexamines the relationship between the individual and duty, personal happiness and a sublime calling. Written in an exceptionally powerful, lyrical and reflective style, the novel "Night Flight" is a timeless meditation on courage, responsibility, the meaning of life and the human desire to overcome one's own limits in the vastness of the sky.
