Carlos Castaneda

Carlos Castaneda’s *The Teachings of Don Juan* is a cult anthropological study and spiritual novel about initiation into a shamanic reality and the mystical teachings of a Yaqui Indian. With an afterword by Dr. Antun Vitturi.

The book The Teachings of Don Juan: A Yaqui Way of Knowledge by American anthropologist Carlos Castaneda is one of the most influential yet controversial works of contemporary literature straddling the boundaries of anthropology, esotericism, and fiction. The 1981 edition published by Belgrade’s Prosveta introduced this work to local readers, conveying Castaneda’s years of fieldwork and his encounters with the elderly Yaqui Indian and shaman (brujo), Don Juan Matus of Mexico.

The author documents in detail the process by which Don Juan gradually initiates him into a complex worldview, teaching him to use medicinal and hallucinogenic plants (such as peyote, datura, and mushrooms) as tools to shatter the ordinary boundaries of perception. Through these experiences, Castaneda confronts the concept of the "man of knowledge" and the idea of "stopping the world," while learning to grapple with fear, clarity, power, and death as fundamental teachers in life. The book sparked a global wave of interest in alternative spirituality, shamanism, and altered states of consciousness.

Although there has been much debate over whether the work constitutes rigorous scientific material or skillfully crafted literary fiction, The Teachings of Don Juan has retained its hypnotic appeal. It continues to intrigue readers worldwide, prompting them to question their own reality and the limits of human consciousness.
