Zagrepčanka

Zagrepčanka

Branislav Glumac

This cult Croatian novel follows a rebellious young woman named Marijana and her passionate yet impossible romance with a worker named Vanja. It is a story about class differences, freedom, eroticism, and the hypocritical morality of the urban elite.

Branislav Glumac’s Zagrepčanka (1978) is one of the best-selling and most influential Croatian urban novels of all time. The plot follows Marijana, a young woman from a wealthy and prominent Zagreb family in the Tuškanac district, who grows up amidst a backdrop of superficial glamour, hypocrisy, and family secrets. Rebelling against her family and bourgeois conformity, Marijana leads a provocative, promiscuous life until she meets Vanja, a poor, unassuming worker. A passionate and profound—yet ultimately tragic—love blossoms between them, burdened by insurmountable class, social, and generational divides. Through their relationship, Glumac unflinchingly exposes the moral decay and duplicity of the high society and elite of that era. Distinguished by its innovative and subversive writing style—notably lacking conventional punctuation such as periods and commas—the novel offers a raw, fast-paced, and authentic portrayal of Zagreb’s street life, nightlife, youthful rebellion, and eroticism. Zagrepčanka remains a timeless story about the quest for genuine love and personal freedom amidst social constraints and taboos.
