The Greatness and Fall of Cesar Birotteau by H. de Balzac (1953 edition) is a poignant novel about an honest Parisian perfumer whose rise and tragic financial collapse expose the cruelty of the bourgeoisie.

The novel The Rise and Fall of César Birotteau (titled simply César Birotteau in some editions)—part of Balzac’s monumental cycle The Human Comedy—stands as one of the most striking works of French realism. In the 1953 Croatian edition (published by Kultura, Zagreb), this classic reaffirms itself as a masterful social critique and a precise depiction of an individual’s rise and subsequent ruin within the capitalist society of the 19th century. The protagonist, César Birotteau, is an honest, hardworking, and naive Parisian perfumer who, after years of effort, gains a solid reputation, wealth, and social recognition. Emboldened by his success, a political honor, and an ambition to ascend into higher social circles, Birotteau engages in risky financial and real estate speculations; he even hosts an extravagant, costly ball intended to impress the Parisian elite. His naivety is exploited by unscrupulous bankers and former employees seeking revenge, who lure him into a trap that leads to his total bankruptcy. Balzac masterfully analyzes market mechanisms, greed, the credit system, and the ruthlessness of the business world. Through the protagonist’s poignant struggle to repay his debts—and restore his good name—through honest labor, the novel presents a profound moral drama concerning dignity, greed, and the price of social advancement.
