Polomljeno poetičko zrcalo
Critical essays on contemporary Croatian prose, from Tribuson and Pavličić to writers associated with Quorum, alongside discussion of literary criticism and theory.
Polomljeno poetičko zrcalo, Milovan Tatarin’s first book, brings together critical and essayistic writing on contemporary Croatian prose and its interpretation. Published in 1991, it documents an early stage of his engagement with contemporary literature, alongside the interests in earlier Croatian writing that would shape his subsequent scholarship.
Its scope extends from Goran Tribuson and Pavao Pavličić to prose writers associated with the journal Quorum. Bringing different generations and narrative approaches into view, the collection invites comparison between their literary poetics. Attention to fiction is accompanied by an interest in how critics describe and evaluate it.
The final chapter turns to literary commentary and the analytical and theoretical work of contemporary critics. The book therefore considers both creative writing and the critical discourse surrounding it, connecting literary production with the methods used to interpret it.
For readers of Croatian fiction, literature students and those interested in criticism, the collection offers a perspective on the diversity of contemporary prose and an introduction to Tatarin’s early critical work.
