Vihor: igrokaz u četiri čina iz primorskog života

Ivo Turina Gavrov

"The Whirlwind: A Play in Four Acts from Coastal Life" by Ivo Turina Gavrov is a drama from coastal (Dalmatian) life with themes of family conflicts, tradition, love and social change.

Vihor is a play in four acts by Ivo Turina Gavrov, published in 1927 in Sarajevo by Hrvatska tiskara. It is a regional drama set in the coastal (Dalmatian) environment, typical of Croatian literature between the two world wars.

Ivo Turina Gavrov was a prolific author who wrote plays and dramas with strong regional characteristics. In Vihor he depicts the life of coastal people — their customs, family relationships, conflicts between old tradition and new times, and the impact of social and economic changes on individuals. The title Vihor symbolically suggests turbulent passions, sudden twists of fate, and the unrest that grips the characters, similar to the strong wind that blows through the coastal region.

The play belongs to the tradition of realistic-romantic plays that were popular on Croatian stages at the time, especially in the provinces. The author faithfully portrays the local color — the language, mentality and everyday life of coastal families, sailors, peasants and citizens. The main conflicts revolve around love, marital and generational problems, honor and adaptation to new social circumstances.

The 1927 edition is today a rare antiquarian copy, sought after among collectors of Croatian drama and regional literature. It represents part of a wider wave of Croatian literature that sought to depict the life of different Croatian regions (Slavonia, Zagorje, Dalmatia, Primorje) through theatrical form.

Vihor is interesting as a testimony to theatrical and literary creativity in the Kingdom of SHS/Yugoslavia, when authors often used regional themes to bring the audience closer and depict social changes in the interwar period.
