In relation to the social sciences, history has the advantage of antiquity and legitimacy, and its recent renewal has not invalidated its properties. It remains a science that is inseparable from the nation, which is its essential ingredient; it retains its rules, customs, chairs, scientific societies, which create a common language and professional consensus... After all, it still has the nation in mind, even if it observes its past from a different angle than before, and thus illuminates the national social. That is why its institutional rootedness and its radiation on an educated audience have never been so strong, no matter how temporary the problems posed by the increasing indeterminacy of its field in secondary education.
