"Lord Jim" by Joseph Conrad is a psychological novel that follows the story of Jim, a young British sailor burdened with guilt and shame after abandoning the ship "Patna" with passengers in danger.

After being tried for cowardice, Jim seeks redemption and peace by moving to remote parts of the Malay Archipelago. In the village of Patusan, he gains the trust of the local population and becomes their leader. However, his sense of honor is once again put to the test by the arrival of the villainous Brown. Jim takes responsibility for the safety of the village, which ends in his tragic death when he voluntarily surrenders to the revenge of the local leader.

The novel explores themes of honor, responsibility and redemption, offering deep insight into human conscience and morality. Lord Jim is dominated by the tacitly accepted and clearly formulated rules of behavior of a certain but universal community: the navy, the world of constructive loyalty, service... Lord Jim's world is realistic. Conrad is perhaps unique among writers-sailors who did not express sailing as an adventure of a lifetime with epic pathos.
