Predsjednički dućan

Vesna Marić

The new novel by Vesna Marić, a British writer who, as a teenager, had to escape from wartime Mostar and continue her life in England, alludes to a history that is very familiar to all of us, in the original vision and manner of great emigrant novels.

Pictures of the President and gifts in his honor can be found in homes across the country, purchased in stores like the one owned by Ruben and Roza Marić. The couple met in the partisans, fighting for a new nation in the midst of the conflict of World War II. The President has not died yet and the country is still whole, does that remind you of anything…?

The new novel by Vesna Marić, a British writer who, as a teenager, had to escape from wartime Mostar and continue her life in England, alludes to a history that is very familiar to all of us, in an original perspective and in the manner of great émigré novels. In Vesna Marić’s characters, we will recognize mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters, aunts, uncles, friends and colleagues, lovers and lovers… from a time so close, yet so distant.

The touching story of a mother and daughter, torn between emotions and beliefs, as well as the wry humor with which Vesna Marić made us laugh even in the most difficult passages of her autobiographical novel The Blue Bird, make The President's Shop a special read in English literature, which in the Croatian translation by Andy Jelčić represents a tender dedication to all our memories, but also to our hopes.
