Die Handlung des Romans spielt in der armen Pension von Mrs. Walker, wo der alte Mann Goriot lebt, ein ehemaliger reicher Nudelproduzent, der jetzt aufgrund seiner grenzenlosen Liebe zu seinen Töchtern Anastasia und Delphine verarmt ist. Neben ihm in der Pension lebt ein junger Jurastudent, Eugène de Rastinac, ein ehrgeiziger Provinzler, der mit dem Wunsch nach Paris kommt, in der Gesellschaft erfolgreich zu sein.
Goriot ist ein Symbol der väterlichen Selbstaufopferung – er gab sein gesamtes Vermögen, um seine Töchter in die High Society zu bringen, doch jetzt schämen sie sich für seine miserable Situation und ignorieren ihn fast völlig. Eugène, fasziniert von Luxus und Macht, betritt mit Hilfe des mysteriösen Verbrechers und Manipulators Vautrin die Welt der High Society, kommt aber gleichzeitig Goriot nahe und wird Zeuge seines tragischen Schicksals.
In dem Moment, als Goriot schwer erkrankt, versucht Eugène, seine Töchter anzurufen, aber sie kommen nicht, da sie mit ihren sozialen und Liebesintrigen beschäftigt sind. Goriot stirbt untröstlich, verlassen und vergessen, während Eugène die Grausamkeit der Welt erkennt, zu der er gehören möchte. Außer Eugene und zwei bezahlten Sargträgern ist niemand bei der Beerdigung anwesend.
