Banica Katarina Zrinska hatte ein schlechtes Gefühl und setzte alles daran, Ban Petar Zrinskis Frau von ihrer Reise nach Wien zu Verhandlungen mit dem Zaren abzubringen. Nach Bans Abreise dringen der gierige General Herberstein und seine Armee in die Stadt Ozalj ein, um Hinweise auf Verrat zu finden und die umliegenden Adelsdörfer zu plündern. Um die Bauern zu schützen, geht Banica Katarina nach Zagreb, doch unterwegs wird sie von Soldaten des Generals Herberstein verhaftet und ihr die teure Perlenkette gestohlen. Viele Jahre später wurde Graf Baćani, der damalige Besitzer des Ozalj-Herrenhauses, durch Beschluss der Pestkammer Eigentümer der umliegenden Wälder. Um ihre Wälder zu verteidigen, revoltieren die Bauern.
