Julije Klović: Ikonografske studije

Julije Klović: Ikonografske studije

Ivana Prijatelj-Pavičić

What constitutes the greatness of Klović's miniature painting art in the context of his epoch is the starting question of this book of extensive iconographic and iconological analyses.

The symbolism of Klović's work, the author believes, can only be considered when Klović is viewed as a learned painter of his era, in whose work - the text represented by the image - the intellectual and spiritual climate of the time can be read.

Using this way of observation, the author analyzes, for example, the principles of incorporating classic biblical, ancient, mythological and contemporary events into Klović's miniatures, then Klović's influence on the development of church and court miniaturism in the 16th century. Furthermore, the author analyzes Klović's manuscripts as documents about the life of his patrons and clients, phenomena that connect Klović with contemporary artists, and Klović's ingenuity that sets him apart from the miniaturist matrix of the time.

Ivana Prijatelj Pavičić, an art historian from Split, is a full professor at the Department of Art History at the Faculty of Philosophy in Split.
