Charles W. Morris jedan je od najutjecajnijih predstavnika novopozitivizma, koji vezuje uz pragmatizam. Začetnik opće teorije o znakovima, semiotike, koju dijeli na sintaktiku, semantiku i pragmatiku.

Charles W. Morris bavio se posebno ispitivanjem umjetničkoga jezika, koji po njem ne stvara konvencionalne odnose između znakova i označenih predmeta, te se razlikuje od znanstvenog i tehnološkoga. Umjetnik stalno eksperimentira s novim sintaktičkim kombinacijama, koje mogu postojati i u obliku koji bi logičari znanstvenoga jezika označili kao proturječan.
