Plesala je jedno ljeto

Per Olof Ekstrom

Student Goran spends his summer in the countryside, where he falls in love with Kerstin. Their love is accompanied by opposition from his surroundings and a tragedy that changes his life forever and marks his growing up.

Per Olof Ekström's novel She Danced One Summer follows a nineteen-year-old student Goran Stendahl who spends his summer vacation with his uncle Anders in the Swedish countryside. At first, he finds rural life strange and monotonous, but he is soon drawn to nature, peace, and a simple way of life.

He meets seventeen-year-old Kerstin, a modest and withdrawn girl from a nearby farm. A sincere love develops between them, which becomes the center of the novel. Their relationship is filled with happiness, walks together, dances, and plans for the future. However, the strict and conservative rural environment does not accept their relationship.

Kerstin's parents, as well as the local priest, believe that their love is inappropriate and put a lot of pressure on the young couple. Despite the obstacles, Goran and Kerstin do not give up on each other and dream of a life together. Towards the end of the summer, tragedy strikes – Kerstin suddenly dies, and Goran is left broken and forced to accept the painful loss.

The novel depicts the power of first love, the conflict between youthful desires and social norms, the difference between city and country life, and the process of growing up. The main message of the work is that love and life experiences, no matter how brief or painful, permanently shape a person.
