Priča o dečaku po imenu Tarun, koji je izgubio roditelje tokom rata nakon što su ih ubili nacisti. Ostavljen je pored puta, gde su ga pronašli lutajući Romi koji su odlučili da ga usvoje. Zbog svetle kože, zvali su ga „Belo Ciganče“.

Tarun odrasta u romskom šatoru, prihvatajući njihov način života, običaje i vrednosti. Njegov usvojitelj, Papa Mulon, bio je čovek plemenitog srca i postao mu je kao otac. Međutim, nisu ga prihvatili svi članovi zajednice; Henza, Mulonova žena, pokazuje neprijateljstvo prema njemu, smatrajući ga teretom.

Uprkos izazovima, Tarun razvija jaku vezu sa konjem Breskom, koga je odgajio nakon smrti svoje kobile. Njihovo prijateljstvo simbolizuje Tarunovu sposobnost da pronađe ljubav i pripadnost u svetu koji ga često odbacuje.

Roman istražuje teme identiteta, pripadnosti, tolerancije i odrastanja. Kroz Tarunovu priču, autor pokazuje kako ljubav i prihvatanje mogu prevazići predrasude i neprijateljstvo.
