Priča o dječaku Tarunu, koji je tijekom rata ostao bez roditelja nakon što su ih ubili nacisti. Ostavili su ga pored ceste, gdje su ga pronašli Romi lutalice i odlučili ga usvojiti. Zbog njegove svijetle puti, nazvali su ga "Bijelo ciganče".

Tarun odrasta u romskoj čergi, prihvaćajući njihov način života, običaje i vrijednosti. Njegov usvojitelj, tata-Mulon, bio je čovjek plemenitog srca i postao mu je poput oca. Međutim, ne nailazi na prihvaćanje od svih članova zajednice; Henza, Mulonova žena, pokazuje neprijateljstvo prema njemu, smatrajući ga teretom.

Unatoč izazovima, Tarun razvija snažnu povezanost s konjem Breskom, kojeg je othranio nakon smrti kobile. Njihovo prijateljstvo simbolizira Tarunovu sposobnost da pronađe ljubav i pripadnost u svijetu koji ga često odbacuje.

Roman istražuje teme identiteta, pripadnosti, tolerancije i odrastanja. Kroz Tarunovu priču, autor prikazuje kako ljubav i prihvaćanje mogu prevladati predrasude i neprijateljstvo.
