Na početku romana Titus, gospodar dvorca Gormenghast, abdicirao je svoje prijestolje. Rođen i doveden do ruba muškosti u golemom, trulom dvorcu, Titus se buni protiv prastarog rituala čiji je i gospodar i zatočenik i bezglavo juri u svijet.
