The main character, Juan, a young provincial, meets Sappho, a woman from the Parisian underworld who is older than him, but still extremely attractive. A tumultuous relationship develops between them that Juan cannot get out of. This novel explores the themes of love, suffering and misfortune and leaves a deep impression on the reader.
