Maćeha

Janko Matko

A novel about great love, suffering and a new beginning.

The young shepherd Srećko, who worked as a helper at the Babić family, and Manda, the assistant of Dr. Pisačić, got married and had a little girl whom they named Ljubica. Their happiness was short-lived because Srećko died on the battlefield, and not long after that, Manda also died of grief. Ljubica grew into a beautiful and hard-working girl, and Luka fell in love with her and proposed to her. After the wedding, Ljubica gave birth to four children to Luka. Unfortunately, one day Ljubica fell into a cold river and fell seriously ill and soon died. Luka was inconsolable, but his relatives convinced him that he should remarry and find a woman who would be a good stepmother to the children...

Maurice Druon

Big families is Drion's best novel. In it, the writer, in a very vivid and striking way, gave a cross-section of French society after the First World War: some characters of the novel become like living witnesses of their time.

Aristotel noted that "art imitates life" but it turned out that "life imitates art" can also be the other way around, as in the case of the novel The First, Second, Third Man by Mirjana Đurđević.
