Doba života i doba smrti

Doba života i doba smrti

Erich Maria Remarque

In the work Age of Life and Age of Death by one of the most important authors of wartime Germany, the ideas of his masterpiece Nothing New in the West echo.

The story begins one winter on the Russian front. The Second World War is going on. German forces are stationed near a destroyed and burning village. Daily shelling, shooting hostages, corpses buried in deep snow... Greber is a young soldier who has been in that place for several years and is trying to survive. And he, like the others, dirty and lousy, performs his "military duty". When he finds himself in a firing squad, he initially points the barrel of his rifle in the air because he cannot shoot a man, but over time he realizes that this is only prolonging the agony of the victim who will eventually be killed.
