The book Waves of Fate (1927) is a sentimental romance novel set on the tea plantations of sunny Ceylon (present-day Sri Lanka), which explores the waves of fate through the conflict of heart and duty, family secrets, and exotic adventure.

Rich manufacturer Georg Roland, bound by an old promise to his mother, forces his daughter Waltraut to marry his stepson Rudolf, whom he does not love. Shaken and confused, Waltraut agrees to the engagement, but her heart beats for freedom. On the way to Ceylon, where Roland manages the plantations with Rudolf, she meets Jan Werkmeester - a brave neighboring planter, charming and independent. Waltraut struggles with blossoming feelings, torn between family loyalty and passion. Rudolf, jealous and hurt, discovers her love and asks to break off the engagement, but Georg insists on the wedding. Escalation comes with a secret from the past: Roland's promise is a hidden conspiracy of his mother, who saved the family from ruin, but now prevents happiness. When Rudolf learns the truth - that he is not a blood relative, but an adopted son - he gives up, freeing Waltraut. The couple meet in passionate love in the middle of the tropical wilderness, where the waves of the ocean symbolize the unstoppable changes of fate. The novel ends with the triumph of true love, forgiveness, and family reconciliation.
