Premda u nekim trenucima Freud piše i o osobnim nedaćama što su ga tijekom života kontinuirano pratile, u njegovoj Autobiografiji prije ćete doznati o metodi liječenja duševnih bolesti, teoriji osobe, analizi sna nego o njegovu braku, ženi i djeci.

»Dvije se teme provalače kroz ovo moje djelo: moj životni udes i povijest psihoanalize. Obadvije su prisno povezane, kao što se to vidi iz mojega prikaza, jer je psihoanaliza postala sadržajmojega života i, prema tome, nikakav moj osobni doživljaj nije vrijedan spomena ako ne zadire u područje mojeg naučnog interesa«.

Tako ukratko opisuje svoju Autobiografiju Sigmund Freud, znanstvenik koji se u potpunosti posvetio svojemu djelu, pa je i njegova Autobiografija više izvješće o njegovu vlastitu napredovanju u učenju i razvijanju psihoanalitičke metode nego sjećanje na, primjerice, djetinjstvo, prijatelje, obitelj, uzore...
