Rokaška kraljevina

Rokaška kraljevina

Matko Sršen

Matko Sršen is a writer and theater director from Dubrovnik. Every pore of his novel "Kingdom of Rokaška" breathes the spirit of the theater and the mythology of that city, which is omnipresent from the first to the last page.

The Kingdom of Rokaška is a children's state founded by small residents of the Izaroka district of Dubrovnik's Old Town in the mid-fifties of the last century. They are neither Molnar's self-sacrificing nor Golding's cruel; they are just children oppressed by the strange limitations and opportunities of their time, and constantly eager for play. The Old Town and its walls are the perfect stage for their day and night show, but also their raison d`etat.

The Kingdom of Rokaš is not a children's book, but rather a war novel. Unusual in its kind, but still a war novel, in which the little Rokas are at war with the big teas, members of the People's Militia.

On the one hand, adults, armed with pistols and batons, and on the other, children who acquired their "royal skills" acting in "Hamlet" in Lovrijenac and in other Dubrovnik plays, armed with an imagination that transcends all social boundaries.
