Dinko Šimunović

Dinko Šimunović (1873–1933) is one of the most important modern Croatian storytellers. His stories often deal with the themes of the Dalmatian hinterland, depicting the life, customs and mentality of the people of that region.

  1. A woman "Muljika" is a story about the traditional, patriarchal society of Dalmatian Zagora, where women are subject to the will of men. The main character, Muljika, symbolizes the longing for freedom and love. Due to her beauty and not fitting into the strict norms of society, she experiences a fate that highlights the conflict between individual desires and traditional rules. The story is imbued with lyricism and a nostalgic image of nature.

  2. Rudica This story deals with the life of a young girl Rudica, who stands out for her natural beauty and good heart. Through her character, Šimunović explores the fate of women in rural areas, where they are often victims of social expectations and restrictions. Rudica faces the patriarchal norms that determine her life, and the story thematizes the contrast between innocence and the cruelty of reality.

  3. Đerdan "Jerdan" is a symbolic story in which jewelry – a necklace – plays a special role. At the center of the story is the fate of a woman for whom a necklace becomes a metaphor for a difficult position and hindrance in society. The story is filled with elegiac tones and Šimunović's criticism of society is reflected in the fate of the characters, especially women, who are subordinated to other people's wills.

  4. Coward "Kukavica" deals with the themes of love, loyalty and suffering. The story is interwoven with the symbolism of the cuckoo, a bird that is often associated with loneliness and regret. Through this short story, Šimunović emphasizes the tragic destinies of individuals who cannot realize their dreams due to social and family obstacles. Lyrics and nature again play a key role in creating the atmosphere.
