Istočno od raja

Istočno od raja

John Steinbeck

Steinbeck considered this novel his best work. Literary criticism and the widest audience agree with him. A famous film was made based on it, which was awarded in Cannes.

East of Eden is the first American saga describing farm and provincial life in America in the period 1860 - 1920. The stage of dramatic events is the lovely Salina Valley, where the novelist was born and which he describes in most of his works. Here, with a great character analysis and a deep dive into the psyche of the characters, he brought the chronicle of two American families through two generations. On one side, the Trasks, a mixture of tenderness and savagery, and on the other, the Hamiltons, who write yarns from their mother's lineage, a balanced and gentle group of people, which forms a peaceful background to the rebellious and turbulent lives of the Trasks.

In this novel, Steinbeck created some of his most memorable characters and explored his most enduring themes: the mystery of identity, the inexplicability of love, and the deadly consequences of the absence of love.

"East of Paradise" is the most ambitious novel of the American Nobel laureate John Steinebeck (1902-1968), known for the novels "Fruits of Wrath", "Tortilla Flat", "The Winter of Our Discontent", "The Stray Bus", and the longer stories "Of Mice and Men" and "The Pearl". Based on this novel, the famous American director Elia Kazan made a film of the same name in 1955, in which James Dean and Julie Harris played the main roles.
