James Fenimore Cooper

The Last of the Mohicans is a historical romance written by James Fenimore Cooper in 1826. It is the second book of the Pentalogy Tales of the Leather Stocking and the most familiar to the modern audience. The Pathfinder, published 14 years later, in 1840

"The Last of the Mohicans" by James Fenimore Cooper is a classic historical novel set during the Seven Years' War between the French and the British in North America. The story follows the English sisters Cora and Alice Munro, who travel to their father's stronghold accompanied by the scout Hawkeye and two Mohicans - Chief Chingachgook and his son Uncas.

On that journey, they encounter numerous dangers, especially from the insidious Huron Magua, who seeks revenge for personal reasons. Through numerous conflicts and escapes, Uncas shows courage and nobility, but in the end he tragically loses his life, thus symbolically ending the era of the Mohicans.

The novel explores the clash of cultures, bravery, loyalty and the disappearance of Indian tribes under the pressure of colonization. The work is one of the most famous American historical novels and is often interpreted as a criticism of the policy towards the natives at the time.
