Spašeni jezik: Povijest jedne mladosti

Elias Canetti

Autobiographical novel by Elias Canetti. The story begins when his young nanny secretly meets with the young man, which he sees as a child. The young man constantly threatened him that if he said anything to the adults, he would cut out his tongue.

Saved Language is the first part of Elias Canetti's autobiographical trilogy, in which the author describes his childhood and youth. The book covers the period from his birth in 1905 in Rustschuk (today's Bulgaria) to his departure to Vienna after his father's death.

Canetti tells about his childhood in a multicultural environment, where several languages were spoken – Ladino, Bulgarian, German and others. His family moves to England, where he experiences a great shock after his father's sudden death. His mother then takes him to Vienna, where she insists that he master the German language and culture, which becomes crucial for his intellectual development.

In addition to the linguistic and cultural dimension, in the book Canetti explores the relationship with his mother, who has a huge influence on him, and the development of his fascination with literature. His curiosity and love for language shape him into a future writer.

The work is an intimate and moving autobiography that testifies to the importance of language, family and identity in the formation of personality.
