Ragtime

E. L. Doctorow

The novel Ragtime (1975) is one of E. L. Doctorow's most famous works, which masterfully interweaves fiction and real historical events. Ragtime is a powerful picture of American society, a novel that sheds light on true historical processes through ficti

The plot is set in the United States of America at the beginning of the 20th century, and through the story of three families it shows the social, political and cultural changes of that era.

The three main stories follow a wealthy Anglo-American family from New Rochelle, the African-American musician Coalhouse Walker and the Jewish immigrant Tateh. These fates intertwine with famous historical figures such as Harry Houdini, J.P. Morgan, Henry Ford, Emma Goldman and others.

The main theme of the novel is the conflict between old social norms and the coming changes, including racial injustice, workers' rights and technological progress. The story of Coalhouse Walker, whose fight for justice turns into a personal tragedy, is especially impressive.

Doctorow uses a unique storytelling style without classical punctuation and with minimal dialogue, creating a dynamic, cinematic feel.
