Twenty-two stories, spanning from the very beginning of King's career to stories written long after he became famous, provide insight into the growth and development of one of the greatest horror masters of our time. In addition, the collection is equipped with the author's usually witty foreword and brief notes explaining the creation of the stories, thus providing an unusual insight into the mental processes of this accomplished storyteller.

The author wrote the story "The Grim Reaper" when he was eighteen, and the most recent story "The Ballad of the Flexible Bullet" was completed in 1983. Other notable stories include:

  • "The Fog": A group of people trapped in a supermarket face a supernatural fog that hides deadly creatures.
  • "The Monkey": A mechanical monkey brings misfortune to anyone who possesses it.
