Senko Karuza

The book of selected stories by one of the best domestic writers of the middle generation, Senko Karuza, is a kind of comprehensive overview of the last ten years of his work.

Karuza's collections of stories Busbuskalai (1997), Is There Life Before Death (2005) and Guide to the Island (2005) have acquired almost cult status among the domestic literary audience (despite the poor availability of Karuza's books in the distribution network and his "cut-off" from literary life), and the selection from these collections has been supplemented with new stories that prove that he is indeed one of the most interesting Croatian literary voices in the last two decades. The stories, which sometimes mockingly and sometimes with admiration observe the Mediterranean (and especially the Island), sometimes continue in the footsteps of Marinković or Novak, but also escape them, revealing a fresh, bitter-humorous view of a "local-outsider" on the landscape, the people of the Island, their everyday life and intimacy. Although they most often remain in that sensitive, elusive space between the Two, the stories in this book do not shy away from small epiphanies, discoveries that place the Island on our intimate maps of life. AUTHOR INFORMATION Senko Karuza was born in 1957 in Split. He spent his childhood on the island of Vis. He was educated in Vis, Split and Zagreb. He studied philosophy at the Faculty of Philosophy in Zagreb. He published in Polet, Studentski list, Mogućnost, Rival... Included in various anthologies, reviews and short story selections. Translated into foreign languages, performed at several domestic and foreign festivals. Founder of the informal Multimedia Mobile Center for Research into Alternative Forms of Survival on Small and Offshore Islands.
