Narodne pripovijetke
The collection of Folktales, edited by Tvrtko Čubelić, represents a valuable selection of Croatian folktales, fables, fairy tales and poems, collected from oral tradition.
Čubelić, a prominent Croatian folklorist and literary historian, has systematically researched folk literature, and this collection includes texts in standard Croatian, as well as in the Kajkavian and Čakavian dialects, thus preserving the diversity of Croatian oral heritage.
The book contains stories passed down from generation to generation, such as fairy tales about heroes, dragons and princesses, humorous stories, fables with moral lessons, and mythical and legendary narratives. In addition to the texts, Čubelić provides comments, explanations and discussions on folk tales, analyzing their origin, meaning and role in folk culture. The collection emphasizes the spontaneity, national character and authenticity of the stories, often marked by naivety, humor and folk wisdom, which reflects the spirit of the community.
A part of the collection is also dedicated to Slavic folk tales (Russian, Ukrainian, Polish, Serbian and others), showing the connection between Slavic cultures. Illustrations by Ivo Gattin further enrich the experience. This work, the fruit of Čubelić's many years of work, remains crucial for the study of Croatian folklore and folk art, preserving the heritage for future generations.
