Kiklop

Ranko Marinković

The second edition of Kiklop, a masterpiece of Croatian literature. Set in pre-war Zagreb, the novel follows Melkior Tresić, an intellectual and theater critic, whose life falls apart under the pressure of personal and social crises.

Melkior, insecure and introspective, escapes reality into a world of dreams, fantasies and alcoholism. His obsession with the actress Viviana, who symbolises unattainable beauty, and conflicts with friends such as the bohemian Maestro and the anarchic Ugo, reflect his inner turmoil. The novel explores themes of existential anxiety, fear of war and moral dilemmas, as Melkior tries to avoid military service, faced with his own cowardice. Characters such as Don Fernando, a symbol of authority, and Enigma, a mysterious figure, further complicate his world.

Marinković's layered narrative, inspired by Joyce's Ulysses, uses monologues, associations and mythological allusions, especially to the Cyclops from Greek mythology, symbolising a limited view of reality. The language is rich, ironic and full of symbolism, and Zagreb is depicted as a labyrinth in which Melkior wanders. The novel culminates in Melkior's decision to face the war, but leaves the question of his fate open.

Cyclops is a profound analysis of the human psyche, society in crisis, and art, celebrating the complexity of the individual in times of uncertainty.
