O ljubavi mladih

O ljubavi mladih

Marijan Košiček

The novel "On the Love of Youth" by Marijan Košiček, published in 1986, is a psychological-social prose that deals with the themes of growing up, love, sexuality, and interpersonal relationships in the then socialist Yugoslavia.

The plot follows a group of young people – schoolchildren and university students – who are on the transition from adolescence to adulthood. The story focuses on the development of emotional and romantic relationships between them, along with all the insecurities, fears, passions and disappointments that youth brings. Through their inner monologues and dialogues, the novel explores what love means to young people – is it an ideal, a physical desire, an escape, or a search for identity.

Košiček does not romanticize youth, but rather depicts the harsh reality – family pressures, inexperience, social norms, sexual awakening, and conflicts between feelings and reason. The characters go through various experiences: from falling in love and first sexual relations, to rejection, suffering and facing their own mistakes.

At the same time, the novel captures the spirit of the times – the urban, somewhat gray, but emotionally intense life of young people in the late years of socialism, where love often clashes with social conventions and the lack of true communication.
