Gorski car

Gorski car

Svetolik Ranković

In the novel Gorski car, which takes place in the countryside, Ranković also describes an event from his own life: while he was on summer vacation in 1886, robbers attacked his family home and killed his father Pavle, while torturing his mother and others

Svetolik managed to escape and bring help under circumstances similar to those described in this novel in the part when he talks about the landlord Đorđe's hoarding. Despite this, the main character of the novel Đurica is not portrayed as a bloodthirsty murderer, but his character is brilliantly psychologically nuanced. The writer managed to demolish the romantic myth of the so-called mountain emperors, and at the same time he gave an excellent picture of society in all its misery. He also expressed his attitude towards the death penalty.
