Satire

Satire

Radoje Domanović

Domanović sarcastically and humorously portrayed a government steeped in corruption and violence, false patriotism, and a citizenry that was obedient to the point of servility.

His most famous satirical stories are: "Stradija", "Vođa", "Danga", "Dead Sea" and "King Marko for the second time among the Serbs". Domanović's target was not only power and tyranny, but also spinelessness, subservience and servility.

He was extremely witty and elusive for his opponents. There is a well-known case when the authorities intended to attack him through the newspaper and take revenge on him for his works in "Stradia".

When he heard what was going on, Domanović wrote an article in "Stradia" in which he preemptively attacked himself, citing his real and imaginary flaws. There were "epithets" he used to describe himself: bohemian (which was true), drunkard, immoral, lazy, dishonest...

At the end, Domanović wrote that, if someone wanted, he could add something of his own to that article. After such "self-criticism", there was no newspaper pamphlet by the authorities.

Radoje Domanović died young of tuberculosis at the age of 35.
