Vitez Mezon Ruž

Vitez Mezon Ruž

Alexandre Dumas

The novel is set during the French Revolution, more precisely during the Jacobin reign of terror, in the years after the execution of King Louis XVI, while Queen Marie Antoinette was imprisoned in the Temple prison.

The main character is Maurice Lindey, a young republican and soldier who believes in the revolutionary ideals of freedom and justice. However, his life becomes complicated when he meets Geneviève Dixmer, a mysterious and attractive woman married to Mr. Dixmer, a paper merchant. It turns out that Geneviève is involved in a secret royalist conspiracy aimed at rescuing Marie Antoinette from prison. The leader of this group is the mysterious and legendary Knight of the Maison Rouge (fr. Chevalier de Maison-Rouge), who operates from the shadows, uses various disguises and changes identities. Maurice finds himself torn between his political beliefs and his growing feelings for Geneviève. Although he is a republican, he gradually begins to sympathize with the royalists for their humanity and courage. As the plot develops, tension grows. The queen's escape plan becomes increasingly risky, and Maurice is increasingly suspected of collaborating with the enemies of the revolution. The Revolutionary Court, the bloodthirsty Jacobins, and Robespierre's agents increasingly keep a close eye on anyone who might be an opponent of the new regime. In a tragic denouement, the attempt to save Marie Antoinette fails. Geneviève dies, and Maurice is left torn between the ideals of the revolution and personal tragedy. The Knight of Maison Rouge himself is also captured and executed.
