Dan prije svanuća

Dan prije svanuća

Thomas Wiseman

A historical novel based on true events from the closing days of World War II. The story follows a special Reich investigator, Ernst Schöller, who possesses extensive knowledge of key figures and secrets of the Third Reich.

Realizing the inevitable defeat of Germany, Schöller uses his position and information to negotiate with Allen Welsh Dulles, head of the OSS in Switzerland, for his own salvation. The novel focuses on the negotiations between Schöller and Dulles, including the actual talks between SS General Wolff and Dulles in Bern, with the aim of preventing deeper communist penetration into Europe with the late surrender of Germany.

Schöller is supervised by the young American clerk Elliott, who has no experience in field work. Their unusual relationship develops in the world of espionage, where Elliott learns the skills of deception and survival in the face of the horrors of war. Wiseman's story combines historical accuracy with a tense atmosphere, depicting the moral dilemmas, power struggles and chaos of the last days of the Nazi regime. The novel stands out for its detailed depiction of espionage intrigue and psychological development of the characters, although critics noted a lack of likable characters. Wiseman, a former film critic and journalist, skillfully reconstructs historical events, creating a compelling story of betrayal and survival.
