Elderly Veronica McCreedy lives in a seaside villa in Ayrshire. She likes to have a good cup of tea while watching a good wildlife documentary. And she's never seen without her bright red lipstick.
After a difficult upbringing in Britain during World War II, Veronica has a lot of money but few friends. She has no relatives - or so she thought - until she discovers that she has a grandson, Patrick, whom she never knew existed and whose lifestyle she does not approve of. She spends most of her days at home, alone, contemplating who to leave her considerable fortune to when she dies.
But today... today, headstrong Veronica will make a decision and embark on an adventure that will change all of this.
