Delo je tipičan primer Setonovog spajanja dokumentarnog stila i narativne dramatizacije, gde se životinjama daje individualnost, a čovek je prikazan i kao pretnja i kao posmatrač.

Prirodnjak, odličan ilustrator i pisac, Seton je pratio životinje u divljini ili u slobodnim nacionalnim parkovima, crtao ih, fotografisao i beležio svaki detalj njihovog ponašanja. Samo na osnovu dokumentovanih podataka vešto bi oblikovao zanimljivu priču. Želeo je da deca prihvate prirodu u svoj njenoj istinitosti, bez uobičajenih šećernih dodataka.
