Drugi kraj konca

Andrea Camilleri

The Other End (2016) is part of the Inspector Salvo Montalbano series. Set in the fictional Sicilian town of Vigàtu, the novel combines criminal intrigue with the current topic of the migration crisis, with Camilleri's signature humor.

The story begins as Montalbano and his team at the Vigàte police station manage the chaos caused by the influx of migrants arriving by boat on the coast of Sicily. In the midst of a humanitarian crisis, Montalbano is faced with a new case: the brutal murder of Elena Biasini, a young seamstress known for her beauty and kindness. Elena is found stabbed in her workshop, and Montalbano begins an investigation, delving into her personal life and relationships with clients.

The investigation uncovers a complex web of love affairs, jealousies, and ulterior motives. Montalbano, with the help of his team, including Mimì Augello and the clumsy Catarelli, interrogates suspects, from Elena's lover to jealous rivals. Key clues, such as cryptic messages and details from the crime scene, lead him to uncover the perpetrator. At the same time, Montalbano struggles with his own sense of justice as he witnesses the suffering of migrants, leading him to reflect on humanity and morality.

The novel explores themes of justice, compassion, and social inequality, with vivid descriptions of Sicily, its food, and dialect. Montalban's wit and empathy make him a compelling protagonist in this complex and emotional case.
