In the first part, set during the Croatian Homeland War, Toni Longin, a university history professor, goes to Zadar for the twentieth anniversary of his graduation in 1991. Overwhelmed by the events of the war and personal problems, he decides to join the defense of the city. During the fighting, he is seriously wounded and falls into a coma, from which he awakens four years later, faced with changed personal and social circumstances.

The second part of the novel returns to the 9th century, where Toni Longin takes on the role of historian and witness to key events of that time. This segment explores the early historical roots of Croatian identity and social structures.

The third part is set in modern times, where Toni Longin re-examines his role in society and faces the consequences of past decisions. Through an introspective journey, the author analyzes the impact of history on the individual and the collective consciousness.

Through the character of Toni Longin, Brešan shows how an individual copes with changes throughout different historical periods, highlighting universal themes of struggle, identity, and adaptation. The novel combines elements of historical fiction and introspective narrative, providing the reader with deep insight into the complexities of human nature and social change.
