Digitalna kultura

Digitalna kultura

Charlie Gere

The existence of digital culture is most often viewed in light of the latest technological advances, giving the impression that it is completely different from everything that preceded it.

The author of this interesting study proves the opposite – digital culture is not a new phenomenon, nor is its development conditioned solely by technological progress. He states that digital culture in its current form is a historically conditioned phenomenon, the first elements of which appeared as a response to the needs of modern capitalism, only to be unified, thanks to the needs of the wars fought in the mid-twentieth century. Technology is, however, only one of the many sources that contributed to the development of this phenomenon. Other sources include avant-garde artistic practices, countercultural utopianism, critical theory and philosophy, and digital culture is the product of complex interactions and dialectical relationships of all these components. The book is written in the belief that digital culture cannot be understood without distinguishing all the heterogeneous elements of which it is composed, and therefore explains the conditions in which they developed and the way in which they influenced each other.
